A FOCUSED ALTERNATIVE, NOT A FULL REPLACEMENT

CleanVector vs Adobe Illustrator Image Trace

CleanVector can replace a narrow generate, clean, trace, and export workflow. It does not replace Illustrator as a complete vector design application.

The useful question is not which product wins every category. It is which workflow matches the file you have and the asset you need to ship.

Adobe Illustrator is a full professional design environment. Image Trace is one feature inside it. CleanVector is a smaller browser product built around turning AI-made or uploaded rasters into reusable SVG assets.

That difference in scope matters more than a checklist. CleanVector can remove several steps for a marketer, developer, or founder. Illustrator gives a designer much deeper control after the trace.

The practical comparison

Choose based on the file you need to finish, the corrections you expect, and the rest of your design workflow.

When CleanVector is the simpler choice

CleanVector is useful when you need a finished SVG rather than an open-ended design session. Generate or upload the artwork, compare raster and vector, inspect transparency, change a color, save the asset, and export without installing a desktop application.

The workflow is especially relevant for AI-made illustrations with a baked-in canvas. Cleanup happens around the trace, and the asset library keeps the source, result, and later exports together.

The tradeoff is deliberate. You do not get Illustrator's complete anchor editing, typography, artboards, prepress, color management, plugin ecosystem, or breadth of file formats.

When Illustrator is the right tool

Use Illustrator when the trace is the beginning of a substantial design job. Its Image Trace controls can be adjusted to the artwork, expanded into editable objects, simplified, grouped, redrawn, combined with live typography, and prepared for professional print workflows.

It is also the better environment when exact anchor placement, named layers, compound shapes, complex gradients, CMYK, artboards, or many delivery formats are part of the brief.

A browser vectorizer should not pretend those needs disappear. In many professional workflows, CleanVector can prepare a stronger starting SVG and Illustrator can perform the final craft and production work.

Choose the smallest workflow that finishes the asset

For a founder who needs six onboarding illustrations, moving through generation, background removal, tracing, color checks, file organization, and exports may be more work than the trace itself. An integrated workflow is valuable because it keeps those stages together.

For an illustrator refining a permanent brand mark, the trace is only a starting point. Deep geometry and typography controls justify a complete design application.

Test with one representative image. Put both outputs on dark and light backgrounds, inspect the nodes, make the most common edit your team needs, and export to the exact downstream format. The winning workflow is the one that produces an approved asset with the least risky cleanup.
