Reads the PDF-compatible copy
Illustrator stores a PDF version of each artboard inside the .ai file. The converter reads that copy, so you get what Illustrator last saved, not its layers or editing history.
CleanVector / vector utilities
Open an Adobe Illustrator .ai file as SVG without Illustrator. Choose an artboard, keep its vector paths and download an SVG you can edit or use on the web.
Free account · no credits · up to 10 MB / 100 artboards
The .ai file is processed on our server in a temporary workspace. Temporary input and output files are deleted after the conversion finishes or fails.
Choose or drop an Illustrator file up to 10 MB. It needs PDF compatibility, which Illustrator turns on by default when saving.
Enter the artboard number and convert it. The result shows how many artboards the file has, so you can convert another without uploading again.
Check the preview and any embedded-image warning, then download the SVG or continue in the SVG editor.
An inspectable example
Illustrator stores a PDF-compatible copy of each artboard inside the .ai file, and that copy is what this converter reads. Our sample holds only that layer and was written by our build script, not saved from Illustrator. Left: a rendering of the sample. Right: the converted SVG.

1 artboard · 0 embedded raster images · outlined lettering
These fixed example files are available without signing in. Your own files use the account and plan requirements shown above.
Before you export
Illustrator stores a PDF version of each artboard inside the .ai file. The converter reads that copy, so you get what Illustrator last saved, not its layers or editing history.
Appearance effects, live text and symbols arrive as their drawn shapes. Paths stay vector and text becomes outlines.
If that option was off when saving, the .ai has no readable copy. Save it again with Create PDF Compatible File turned on, or export EPS or PDF and use those converters.
